Where do I grow best?

How to care for me:

Full-Sun

Both lavender and rosemary thrive in full sunlight. Ensure your potted plants receive at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Placing them in a location with ample sunlight exposure ensures vigorous growth and abundant flowering. They can tolerate some shade, especially in hot climates, but adequate sunlight is essential for healthy growth and aromatic foliage.

Water

Lavender and rosemary prefer dry conditions and do not require frequent watering. Water the plants thoroughly when the top inch or two of soil feels dry (you can measure this by sticking your finger into the soil). During hotter months, you might need to water more frequently, but avoid overwatering. In winter, reduce watering to once every few weeks.

Soil Nutrients

While potted plants generally need more fertilization than in-ground plants, lavender and rosemary do not require a lot of soil fertilization, and can become leggy and unhealthy if over-fertilized. We suggest fertilizing once or twice in spring when new growth first starts, and then maybe just once or twice again at the beginning of summer.

Dormancy

Lavender and rosemary experience a period of dormancy during the colder months. In winter, growth slows down, and the plants require less water and no fertilization. Keep the pot outdoors during dormancy, unless you are in a location with particularly harsh winters, in which case your plant may benefit from being kept in a sheltered area like a garage through dormancy, so long as it still receives some light during this period.

Harvest

Harvest lavender and rosemary by snipping the stems just above the leaf nodes. For optimal flavor and fragrance, harvest in the morning after the dew has dried but before the heat of the day. Regular harvesting encourages bushier growth and prevents the plants from becoming woody. Lavender is best harvested before the buds open into flowers. You will know this because the little purple pods will still be orzo-shaped and slightly fuzzy. Rosemary can be harvested all throughout the growing season.

Pests and Disease

Common pests include aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. Ensure proper air circulation to prevent fungal diseases like powdery mildew. Pests and disease often vary greatly by region. In terms of insects, neem oil can combat many problems. If you are unsure, send us a photo of your plant and the problem, and we'll do our best to identify it and suggest more specific solutions!

Growing in Less Ideal Climates

While the region indicated on the map above specifies where this plant grows best, the virtue of growing plants in pots is that, with a little elbow grease, you can create your own environment. These are our tips for anyone attempting to grow alpine strawberries in other climates.

Colder Regions

If you are interested in growing lavender and rosemary in a colder climate, we suggest you keep your plant in an unheated garage with a window or a sunroom during the winter months. While these plants do benefit from a dormancy period, they cannot withstand extreme cold temperatures, and do require sunlight throughout the entire year (although it can be reduced during dormancy).

Hotter Regions

Lavender and rosemary are native to the Mediterranean, and so are quite comfortable in the heat. That being said, extremely wet-heat may cause your plants to get root-rot or fungal infections. If you do wish to try to grow these plants in regions with higher humidity, make sure to let your plant dry out completely between waterings, and consider adding an amendment like perlite to your soil during potting to assist in drainage.
